E.A. Evans Painter

A visual storyteller who captures the special moments in life.

Elizabeth is a formally trained senior Canadian artist who has provided a highly acclaimed body of art work over a 60 year career.

She has been a full time working painter of pictures all her adult life.  She always knew that her life would be spent as an artist – bringing her inner vision into the world through her paintings.  She attended art school at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art in the 1960’s where she was taught, mentored and befriended by one of Canada’s  art masters, Arthur Lismer, a founder of the world famous Group of Seven.  He taught young Elizabeth not only how to apply paint, ink and pencil to paper and canvas but also how to see the world through the eyes of an artist.  He encouraged her Artistic Vision. She was a top student, winning many awards and scholarships, including an opportunity to attend the Banff School of Fine Art where she would spend her summers among fellow creative artists and world renowned teachers.

A lifetime of “Special Moments”

She grew up in Montreal, Quebec but spent much of her childhood in the countryside of the Eastern Townships where her family owned a farm. In 1971 she married William Baker and they have three daughters. In 1994 the family moved to Vancouver on the West Coast of British Columbia.  It was a fresh start with new and exciting subjects for her to paint. In 2009 she moved to the artistically rich little Town of Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast of B.C. where she currently resides with her husband William and her little Havanese dog Lola.

Her art reflects her life – whether it’s the childhood memories of Eastern Canada, the trips to the Maritimes, the mountains and ocean of the West Coast or the love of nature and gardening.  She sees beauty all around her and shares that in her paintings.

During her 60 year career she has shared her artistic vision of ”special moments” through numerous one woman exhibitions at prestigious galleries and museums.  Her various series of paintings, while diverse and sometimes surprising, have one central theme – serenity.  The stillness of a Maritime village, the quiet beauty of a single flower,  the trees, animals and softness of the woods, the tenderness of a still life image or a pastoral landscape are all part of her inner being – one where a calm and nurturing spirit lives. Her inner peace is reflected in the artwork of her outer world.

Artist Statement

As an artist I seek to create an emotional response that captures the viewer’s attention and transports them into the painting. My work is representational and therefore the choice of subject is always a key consideration.

The artistic challenge is in combining form, colour, composition and subject in a way that makes it all work seamlessly. I strive to blend a number of elusive elements in just the right proportions and fuse these to create an image on canvas.

I pursued my passion for art at an early age and attended Canadian art colleges where I learned the techniques needed to serve my artistic vision. My chosen medium is acrylic paint on canvas and my message reflects both the positive and challenging aspects of the human condition. Art is a powerful way for me to tell a compelling story.

I paint with bright, bold colours that are applied in “bricks” – each brick integrates with other bricks to form an overall seamless recognizable image. It’s a challenging and unique technique I describe as “brickilism™”.

In many of my works I include a sub-image – a shadow that is subtle and yet relevant to the overall work. Shadows enhance the story of the main image, creating a sub-plot which may not be discovered by the viewer until they’ve become absorbed in the main story.

As an artist, I strive to ensure the viewer becomes as engaged with each painting as I was during the creative process.

Brickilism Painting

Developer Of The Painting Technique, “Brickilism”

At the beginning of the 21st century Elizabeth developed a unique painting technique she labelled “Brickilism” – similar to Pointilism but with bricks of colour instead of dots.  The “bricks” join together to form one seamless image.  Her brickilism paintings have become well known and widely collected.

Elizabeth’s gift to a frenzied, violent, busy, distracting, stressful and unsettling world is a calm, quiet and spiritual place – your “happy place” which can be experienced by viewing her paintings.
